The Baroness Elsa von Freytag-Loringhoven was born Else Hildegard Ploetz in the Polish-German border town Swinemunde in 1879. Elsa worked as a model, posing for futurist and expressionist painters, Marcel Duchamp among them. She also produced her own Dadaist art, using found materials and her own body and dress, sauntering through Greenwich Village with dogs and outrageous attire. Her poetry was published in The Little Review and elsewhere, and, after her death by suicide, was held by her friend Djuna Barnes.
About the Author
One of the most original women of the 20th century, Elsa was an assistant to Duchamp, and gradually began using her body as art as well as writing avant-garde poetry.
