Halloween was once considered an adult practice referred to as "going a-souling," but it was eventually taken up by children who would visit the houses in their neighborhood and be given ale, food, and money. The tradition of trick-or-treating can be traced back to the early 1900s, but the decorations of all things scary began much before that.
