Editorial Reviews
New York Times Book Review February 26, 1996
So what is the allure of "A Year in New York," with its minimal text and fanciful artwork of cityscapes? The reader does re-discover (O.K., discover) a few new places within these pages. Elisha Cooper, in his first book, captures obvious venues - including Rockefeller Center and a subway station - but also reports on the unobvious, like a basketball court on 135th Street. The result is a sweet but, alas, ultimately annoying book. It exudes a neo-New York sensibility (young, clever, cool) but there is no grime in these portraits, no budget cuts. "A Year in New York" is perfect for an Iowan who loves to visit certain spots of the city (you know, the tourist spots), and who always wants to think of New York as a fun place. And even for many of the city's overwrought denizens, the book is part of the picture. New Yorkers like the whole megillah.

Time Out New York
As much as New Yorkers love their hometown, sometimes a newcomer, flush with fresh ardor, can create a better Valentine to the city. A Year in New York, illustrated and written by Elisha Cooper, is just such a love letter. After graduating from Yale, Cooper arrived in New York in the fall of 1993 to work at The New Yorker as a staff assistant (read "gofer"). He managed to write one "Talk of the Town" piece, but mostly made his presence known by writing internally distributed parodies of staff memos and drawing caricatures of editor's on the walls, in the best Thurber tradition. Cooper's facility with caricature makes his book a delight. It's much more concerned with the characters that the city what it is - the bike messengers, poets, and street performers - than with its landmark buildings.
