Continuum: The First Songbook of Sweet Honey in the Rock
Editorial Reviews
Book Description
Sweet Honey in the RockÕs musical sound has been described in High Fidelity magazine as "breathtaking excursions into harmony singing" and in Down Beat as "neck-hair raising". This six-member African-American a cappella womenÕs group has just celebrated its 25th anniversary. This wonderful collection compiled and edited by Ysaye M. Barnwell features three original compositions and one traditional song arrangement by each of the five singing members. The songs are presented in choral score for easy use by vocal ensembles. Also includes a moving foreword by Harry Belafonte, an introduction by Horace Clarence Boyer, the groupÕs "Her-story," a discography with album covers, photos, and extensive composerÕs and performance notes. Available: SATB divisi a cappella. Also available: "Singing in the African-American Tradition" taught by Ysaye M. Barnwell with George Brandon.
From the Publisher
The distinctive repertoire of a cappella luminairies Sweet Honey In The Rock is much sought after. At last here's a songbook that collects 20 songs and arrangements - four each by five of the current members. There are songs of hope ("Young and Positive"), love ("Stay"), protest ("Ella's Song"), contemplation ("Would You Harbor Me?") and many drawn from African ("Wodaabe Nights") and African-Amercian heritage ("Motherless Chil"). Although SHIR is a women's group, the arrangements are scored for SATB (divisi). 190 pages, folio size (9" x 12").
