About the Author
Roy L. Crum is Professor of Finance at the University of Florida. He received his MBA and Ph.D. from the University of Texas at Austin and his undergraduate degree in political science from the University of Texas. Prior to his appointment at the University of Florida, Dr. Crum was a U.S. Navy submarine officer specializing in naval intelligence. Dr. Crum has worked as a consultant to the World Bank in private sector development activities in Eastern Europe and the former Soviet Union, and is currently involved with several projects relating to business school program development in both Russia and the Kyrgyz Republic. Dr. Crum has published widely in the areas of corporate finance and international business. His research focuses primarily on the evaluation of foreign direct investments, inflation, and international cash flow management. He has participated in management education programs for the World Bank, Russian Privatization Agency, Eurasia Foundation, and numerous other corporate and university sponsors. Dr. Crum received teaching awards in 1990, 1992, and 1999, and was a recipient of the Teaching Incentive Program Award in 1999. He is an honorary professor at two foreign universities. Apart from his professional activities, Dr. Crum enjoys gardening, wood working, and travel to exotic destinations. He is an amateur archeologist and particularly enjoys trips where he has an opportunity to combine his interests in ancient cultures, historical preservation, and emerging markets. Dr. Eugene F. Brigham is a Graduate Research Professor Emeritus at the University of Florida, where he has taught since 1971. Dr. Brigham received his MBA and PhD from the University of California-Berkeley and his undergraduate degree from the University of North Carolina. Prior to coming to the University of Florida, Dr. Brigham held teaching positions at the University of Connecticut, the University of Wisconsin, and the University of California-Los Angeles.
Dr. Brigham has served as president of the Financial Management Association, and he has written more than the 40 journal articles on the cost of capital, capital structure, and other aspects of financial management. The ten textbooks on managerial finance and managerial economics of which he is the author or co-author are used at more than 1,000 universities in the United States, and they have been translated into 11 languages for worldwide use. He has testified in numerous electric, gas, and telephone rate cases at both the federal and state levels. He has served as a consultant to many corporations and government agencies, including the Federal Reserve Board, the Federal Home Loan Bank Board, the U.S. Office of Telecommunications Policy, and the RAND Corporation.
Dr. Brigham continues to teach, consult, and do research, as well as continue his work on textbooks. He spends his spare time on the golf course and with his family and two dogs, Geoff (after Geoffrey Chaucer) and Chocolate Chip. He also enjoys outdoor adventure activities and recently returned from a biking trip in Alaska, where he and his daughter biked nearly 300 miles in a week and took a 15-mile, seven-hour hike up a 14,240-foot peak. He was glad to get back to textbooks! Joel F. Houston is a Bank of America Professor of Finance at the University of Florida. He received his MA and PhD from the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania and his undergraduate degree from Franklin and Marshall College. Prior to his appointment at the University of Florida, Dr. Houston was an Economist at the Federal Reserve Bank of Philadelphia.
Dr. Houston has published widely in the areas of corporate finance and commercial banking. His research focuses primarily on the role of financial institutions in the capital acquisition process and mergers in the banking industry. In addition to co-authoring Fundamentals of Financial Management, Dr. Houston serves as the co-author, along with Eugene Brigham, on the Fundamentals of Financial Management, Concise. He has participated in management education programs for the World Bank, Southern Company, and Service America Corporation. Dr. Houston received the College of Business Teacher of the Year Award in 1992, 1997, and 1999 and was a recipient of the Teaching Incentive Program Award in 1993 and 1996.
Apart from his professional activities, Dr. Houston coaches baseball in his spare time and enjoys spending time at the beach with his wife and two children. He is an avid sports fan and loyally follows the Florida Gators and Pittsburgh Steelers.
