About the Author
Gary A. Porter, CPA, is Professor of Accounting at the University of St. Thomas in St. Paul, Minnesota. He earned Ph.D. and M.B.A. degrees from the University of Colorado and his B.S.B.A. from Drake University. He has published in the Journal of Accounting Education, Journal of Accounting, Auditing & Finance, and Journal of Accountancy, among others, and has conducted numerous workshops on the subjects of introductory accounting education and corporate financial reporting.

Dr. Porter's professional activities include experience as a staff accountant with Deloitte & Touche in Denver, a participant in KPMG Peat Marwick Foundation's Faculty Development program and as a leader in numerous bank training programs. He has won an Excellence in Teaching Award from the University of Colorado and Outstanding Professor Awards from both San Diego State University and the University of Montana. He served on the Illinois CPA Society's Innovations in Accounting Education Grants Committee, the steering committee of the Midwest region of the American Accounting Association, and the board of directors of the Chicago chapter of the Financial Executives Institute. Curtis L. Norton is Deloitte & Touche Professor of Accountancy at Northern Illinois University. He earned his Ph.D. from Arizona State University, his M.B.A. from the University of South Dakota, and his B.S. from Jamestown College, North Dakota. His extensive list of publications includes articles in Accounting Horizons, The Journal of Accounting Education, Journal of Accountancy, Journal of Corporate Accounting, and Journal of the American Taxation Association, Real Estate Review, The Accounting Review, CPA Journal, and many others. In 1988-89, Dr. Norton received the University Excellence in Teaching Award, the highest university-wide teaching recognition at NIU. He is also a consultant and has conducted training programs for governmental authorities, banks, utilities, and other entities. Dr. Norton is a member of the American Accounting Association and a member and officer of the Financial Executives Institute. Steve Jackson, C.P.A., is an Associate Professor at Loyola University New Orleans, where he is the accounting area chairperson. He earned a Ph.D. from Arizona State University and a B.S. from the University of Montana.
Professor Jackson has published articles in such revered journals as Journal of Accounting and Finance Research, Journal of Economic and Social Measurement, Journal of Economic and Business Perspectives, Journal of Business and Economic Research, Accounting Educators Journal, and Journal of Accountancy. His research interests are in accounting education and behavioral issues. He has more than 20 years of teaching experience and has held faculty positions at Northern Arizona University, Western New England College, the University of Southern Mississippi, the University of Southern Maine, and the University of Tennessee at Martin. Dr. Jackson has taught courses in managerial and strategic cost management, auditing and assurance, and financial accounting at both the undergraduate and graduate levels.
Professor Jackson has received numerous teaching awards, including three excellence-in-teaching awards while a doctoral student at Arizona State University. He was named outstanding faculty member by the University of Southern Mississippi Gulf Coast Accounting Society. He was the recipient of the Faculty Senate Intellectual Contributions award while at the University of Southern Maine and the Excellence in Research award at the University of Tennessee at Martin.
Dr. Jackson?s professional activities include membership in the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants, the American Accounting Association, the Institute of Management Accountants, and the Institute of Internal Auditors. He is a former staff accountant with Touche Ross & Co. in Seattle and has more than 12 years of public accounting experience. Roby Sawyers, C.M.A., C.P.A., is Professor of Accounting at North Carolina State University. He earned a Ph.D. from Arizona State University, a master's in accounting from the University of South Florida, and a B.S.B.A. from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
Professor Sawyers has published articles in a variety of journals, including Journal of Accountancy, Journal of Business Ethics, Journal of the American Taxation Association, Advances in Taxation, National Tax Journal, The Tax Adviser, Tax Notes, The CPA Journal, and Auditing: A Journal of Practice and Theory. He is a contributing author of Advanced Business Entity Taxation and was the primary author of a monograph on the future of the estate tax, published by the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants. His research interests include individual behavior and decision making in a variety of contexts, as well as corporate ethics. Professor Sawyers has served as a visiting professor in the International Management Program at the IESEG School of Management, Catholic University, Lille, France, and as an adjunct professor at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He has also taught or developed a variety of continuing education courses for the American Institute of CPAs, the Institute of Management Accountants, McGladrey and Pullen, LLP, BDO Seidman, LLP, and PricewaterhouseCoopers. He has received awards for both outstanding teaching and outstanding extension service from the College of Management at North Carolina State University.
Dr. Sawyers' professional activities include membership in the American Accounting Association, the Institute of Management Accountants, and the American Taxation Association. He has served as an appointed member of the American Institute of CPAs tax division and as chair of the AICPA Trust, Estate and Gift Tax Technical Resource Panel.
